Define the identity

A tag carries an identifier that can be associated with an item, carton, asset or container. The identifier is useful only when ownership, packaging level and data mapping are defined.

Understand the read point

A handheld, workstation or fixed installation captures tag data in a physical area. Tag construction, orientation, material and reader setup all affect the result and must be considered together.

Separate observation from event

Reader output is an observation. It becomes useful after the workflow applies timing, location, identity and state rules to create an action such as receiving, counting, handover, location update or exception review.

Map the operating path

Describe what the operator or connected system does before, during and after the read. Include the destination system, event owner, feedback channel and recovery action for a missing, duplicate or unexpected identity.

State the operating limit

RFID does not remove the need for process design. Mixed materials, missed tags, duplicate reads, uncertain ownership and changes in the site or item mix must be covered by testing and exception handling.

Validate the useful question
