Start with the power model

Passive tags draw operating energy from the reader field. Battery-assisted tags use an onboard battery for the tag electronics and may support additional functions, while active tags use a battery-powered transmitter. Confirm the exact construction before making a capability decision.

Match the interaction

Consider whether the event is a close deliberate interaction, a controlled read zone, a mobile check or a longer-lived asset observation. The tag power model, frequency, antenna construction, reader setup and item environment must be reviewed together.

Check item and environment

Review material, moisture, temperature, attachment, density, movement and the distance between the tag and the item. A power category does not remove the need to test the selected construction in the condition where the workflow will operate.

Account for lifecycle

Record whether the tag is disposable, reusable, embedded or replaceable, and how battery state or tag failure will be detected. A battery-assisted or active option adds lifecycle decisions that a passive label may not require.

Separate capability from evidence

Keep range, response, sensor behavior, service life, availability and reader compatibility as configuration-dependent questions. Do not turn a category description, diagram or isolated test observation into a universal product claim.

Validate the complete choice

Test representative items, orientations, density, movement and normal operating conditions. Retain the selected power model, tag construction, reader arrangement, lifecycle rule and acceptance evidence before expanding the workflow.
